Wine production in Kent

The fertile soil and temperate climate of the Garden of England provide an ideal combination for wine production.  There are a number of wine producers within easy reach of Bedgebury Camping. For wine enthusiasts or those who want a day out with a difference, visiting one of these establishments should definitely be on your list of things to do.

 
 

Chapel Down Winery, Tenterden

The Chapel Down Winery at Tenterden Vineyard, is around a half hour leisurely drive from Bedgebury Camping. It is the largest producer of English wines and is the first ever English producer to win gold for a sparkling wine at the renowned International Wine Challenge. A visit to this Winery is sure to impress.

Three guided tours of the Winery are arranged per day, each one lasting 1¼ hours. Expert will show and explain the processes involved in making the Winery's still and sparkling wines. Visitors will also learn about the history of English wine production and some detail about the grapes used at Chapel Down. Tours finish with a tasting from a selection of award winning wines. Visitors who wish to wander around the vineyards unaccompanied by a guide are free to do so, but access to the Winery is restricted to guided groups.

There is a Wine and Food store selling its own range of wines as well as a Bistro serving Chapel Down wines with or without food! Telephone enquiries regarding guided tours are strongly recommended prior to arriving.

Biddenden Vineyard, Biddenden

The historic village of Biddenden is about a 20 minute drive away from Bedgebury Camping. The vineyards, spanning 22 acres, grow 10 varieties of grape and produce white, red, rosé and sparkling wines. The Biddenden Vineyard also produces its own traditional cider.

Two routes are marked around the vineyards for visitors to follow. Free guided tours by an expert are available, although pre-booking is strongly advised to avoid disappointment.

The wine presses and bottling line are on view in the Winery and visitors can sample from some of the wines, ciders and apple juices. The Biddenden Vineyard shop sells not only its own famous alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, but a delightful range of locally produced foods including chutneys and honey.

Hush Heath Winery, Staplehurst

Located about 15 minutes drive from Bedgebury Camping, the Hush Heath Estate produces sparkling wines and ciders using traditional Champagne methods. Pre-booked guided tours are available. Tastings and self-guided tours are free and available without booking. Monday to Sunday 11am – 5pm including Bank Holidays. Open all year.
